DIY Home Repairs

If you are determined to be a DIY home repair expert to save some money, then the challenge is to know how to do things before you actually try and take on whatever DIY project you are thinking of.  There are some household repairs that are so simple that even the professionals feel bad about charging for them.  Many of these plumbing, heating, electrical, air conditioning, and appliance repairs are simple work that homeowners often overlook.  Some of these repairs can be easily done and will not require an expert to fix the issue thus a “DIY” fix is recommended to save some money.  Make sure you have the necessary tools you need before taking up anyDIY projects. Here are just a few of these DIY home repair solutions:

Fixing a leak

Before calling a plumber for any suspicious puddle of water at your house, try looking for a leaky valve.  Once you found it, check if water is leaking out around the valve stem; if yes, try turning the packing nut about an eighth turn with a wrench.  If tightening the nut doesn’t stop it, shut off the main water valve, remove the handle and nut, and add to or replace the packing material.  That should fix the leak.

Low water pressure coming from the faucet

When this happens, the aerator may need some cleaning or replacement.  Over time, aerators get clogged with minerals or other bits of stuff that break loose from the inside of the pipes.  Remove the aerator by turning it clockwise when you’re looking down on it.  You may need to grip it with pliers to unscrew it but once it’s off, you can take the parts out of the aerator and clean them.  An easier fix will just be to replace it.  Make sure to take it along the hardware store to find the exact thread match.

No hot water

Look through the glass door to see if the pilot is lit or you may remove the metal cover located at the bottom of the water heater.  If you don’t see any pilot light flame, just follow the instructions for relighting the pilot on the label pasted to the tank.  It is important that you check its manual before reaching your phone to call for a plumber.

Warm refrigerator

It could be as simple as turning the dial to a cooler setting.  Check the control and look into the cooling coils as well.  Professional plumbers say it is not uncommon to find that the refrigerator controls are set wrong.  Someone may have moved the dial while putting milk in.  If that is not the case, check the cooling coils.  It may be caked with pet hair and dust, which is incredibly common for refrigerator not cooling.  You can just remove the front grille and vacuum the coils.

 Electric stove burner not heating

Most of the time, this issue happens after a recent cleaning done on the electric Stove burner.  When you slid the burner back into the top, the terminal didn’t engage with the receptacle under the stovetop or the plastic terminal block got knocked out of its holder, which caused the burner not to heat.  There is a quick fix for this, all you have to do is lift the stove-top to see what happened and fix involves reinstalling the terminal block.  A tip would be is to spread the terminals slightly to create a tighter connection.

Busted electrical outlet

If your electrical outlet doesn’t work, reset the GFCI electrical outlets.  Some outlets are protected by upstream GFCIs or GFCI circuit breaker and in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms for GFCI outlets.  Just test and reset them and this might resolved your problem.

Insufficient heat or cooled air

If you are not getting enough heat or cool air at home, maybe it’s time to check the furnace filter and air vents.  More often the reason is a plugged furnacefilter.  It is important that you change inexpensive woven fiberglass filters once a month or buy a better quality pleated filter and change it every three months to avoid heating and cooling problems.  Another thing you have to check in a cold room during heating season is a blocked cold air return.  Make sure an area rug or your couch is not covering a cold air return vent because this can slow the entry of heated air into the room.

There are many other quick fixes for different home repair issues that do not require a professional.  If you have the time and the interest to learn new skills then start planning for your DIY projects.  The more you accept DIY repairs, the more you get to develop your new skills and become an expert in this new field.  Though, it is true that we need professionals to fix some issues that are more complicated and would require expertise that comes with the job but there are just some home repairs that you should never pay for.

Proper maintenance is important

Like cars, boats need to be in tip-top shape in order to function properly. Your boat also needs to be working properly if you want guaranteed safety when sailing the seven seas. For some boat owners, they take it to the extent of customizing and doing maintenance work that voids the warranty and boat insurance. This is a very risky, if not idiotic, thing to do because you will not be properly compensated if something happens to you or your boat. If you really want to ride your boat safely, you need to do proper maintenance work.

Basic maintenance guidelines for first time boat owners

Proper boat maintenance can sound intimidating, but it can be done. If this is your first time owning a boat, there are six guidelines that you need to follow and I will explain to you why you need to follow them:

1.) Motor – When doing boat maintenance, it’s important to check your motor. After every trip, be sure to flush your motor out with water. Every time you finish a trip, check for any signs of wear and tear, corrosions, loose parts, and other damage. When you do spot something wrong with the motor, call for the local repairmen.

2.) Battery – Your boat has a batter if it runs on an electric motor. When you do, charge it after every use. Some batteries are also used only to start the motor, but you should always check every now and then. Keep your battery clean, as dirt can impede its performance.

3.) Cleaning – When you’ve used your boat for a long time, marine life or growth like seaweeds and other marine plants can be a bother, especially if they get stuck in your propeller. You can use detergents made especially for boats or you can hire professional cleaners if it becomes a total bother.

4.) Winterizing – This will only apply to boat owners who live in countries that have the winter season. Winter can do so much damage to your boat, so it’s important to clean the boat, remove the battery and other electronics, take preventive measures against mildew, and to cover the boat.

5.) Special care – Different boats will always have different maintenance instructions, like how the rivets of aluminium boats should checked and leaks should only be fixed by professional welders.

6.) Safety – You should always have life vests, first aid kits, clean water, fire extinguisher, satellite phone, and other important gadgets that could help save your life when you travel by sea.

Following these and other boat maintenance guidelines should help preserve your boat without doing any damage to your boat insurance policy.

Building A Beautiful Garden Gazebo On Your Own

Garden gazebos are great outdoor structures that will enhance the beauty of your front lawn or back yard. It can serve many purposes. It can serve as a nice centerpiece for an outdoor party, a relaxing place to spend quiet afternoons, a perfect area where families can spend quality time together, or an elegant and romantic wedding altar.

Gazebos can also give financial benefit to a property by increasing its value and by making homes being put out to the market more attractive to buyers.  These structures have been around for quite some time now and have become fixtures in parks, plazas, public and private gardens, and the yards of many exclusive homes. They can be made of wood, iron, or concrete among others.

If you love to have a gazebo in your homes, there are several ways in which you can build one. You can actually build it yourself if you have enough time, knowledge and skills, particularly in carpentry. Following a do-it-yourself (DIY) guide on how to build a gazebo, you can have an excellent plan that will guide you through the whole process. The good thing about good DIY guides is that they can initially give you an idea about how much the whole project would cost since all the materials and other essentials needed for the work will be listed, organized, and specified. You can then check which materials are available in your store room and which other materials you need to buy.

A friend of mine built his house by ordering one of those cost-effective  PAAL kit homes, where all the materials needed to build a solid structure of a home are packed in one single building kit. This home kit saved him from the hassles of constantly asking and depending on a contractor about the house he wanted to build, or the details he wanted to include in the blueprint. It also saved him from the hassles of spending much time, money and gas driving around local hardware to locate some building materials.  Instead of dealing with all the troubles encountered when building a house, what he had is a complete assembly of all pre-made parts parts of a sturdy home, needing only the help of an expert team of carpenters.

Gazebos can be build using kits as well. There are many companies that offer kit gazebos these days, but you need to make sure that you check the items that are included in the kid, so as to avoid paying extra for missing kit parts or hardware. The price of gazebo kits also vary according to the size and quality of materials used on the gazebo.

However, if the cost of your gazebo is not much of a consideration on your part and you want to have a gazebo that is customized according to your own designs, then seek the help of an excellent contractor  to immediately work on this home addition. It will surely add beauty to your home and give your family and guests a great place to enjoy doing a lot of activities outdoors.
